In a season where there’s not much news in the golf world, the European Tour is rebranded as the DP World Tour, which is pretty big news for he golf world. DP World is a logistics company out of Dubai, who already sponsored the season ending events for the European Tour currently. Keith Pelley, CEO of the European Tour said on Golf Channel that after a decade of support, they were looking to expand their relationship and this change has been nearly two years in the making.
This is undoubtedly good for golf and for the professionals playing on that tour. They’ve reached record prize money, with a minimum of $2 million in purse per tournament. Total Prize money will surpass $200 million. They will host a minimum of 47 tournaments in 27 different countries. The Rolex Series has expanded from four events to five and the new DP World Tour will have three co-sanctioned with the PGA TOUR.
In a time when there seems to be new tours popping up offering ridiculous financial upsides to the players in the form of prize money, this move certainly will solidify the future of the tour and hopefully attract some bigger names to more regularly make appearances in the tournaments. This change goes into affect almost immediately, starting November 25, 2021.
