The Northern Trust Recap

One thing is for sure, no golf on Sunday sucks.  No one’s complaining about Monday final round playoff golf either, but yesterday was pretty brutal.  Sure preseason football started but does anyone really even watch?  No.

Anyhow, it was quite the tournament in Jersey for the Northern Trust..  As we found out late Saturday, yesterday was a wash due to the hurricane like conditions and safety concerns, so today we are blessed with Monday afternoon playoff golf.    Rahm and Cameron Smith went into the day leading at -16.  Quite a few players were in contention when the last group tee’d off, Spieth had a rough day caring TWO triples in his round.  Hard to believe after he shot what was then a course record 62 earlier in the week. (Cameron Smith shot it on Saturday with ta 60.)  He shot thee rounds over par, and a 62, lol. He’ll have to regroup for next weekend in Maryland at the BMW Championship.  Cameron Smith avoided a disaster with a double bogey after hitting it in the water off the tee on  and  then into the penalty area just short of the green.  So it’s proof these guys are human.

Most of the round was a juggling match at the top between Smith, Rahm and Finau.  Rahm was steady through the first 9, basically a par machine until carding a birdie on 7.  But it wasn’t enough to hold off Finau and Smith who both finished the tournament’s 72 holes at 20-under.   So we had a playoff, during the playoff.  Bonus Golf.  Seems to be a lot of that lately.

After Smith knocked it out of bounds on his tee shot on the first hole, it was pretty sooth sailing to par for Tony, who jumped to the top of the FedEx Cup Standings with the 2000 point bump from the win.  It was his first win on TOUR since 2016.  It’s on to the BMW, which tees up Thursday at Caves Valley Golf Club.
