This upcoming week on the tour takes the players back to South Carolina for what will be the third stop this year. The Palmetto Championship at Congaree is replacing the RBC Canadian Open, which was canceled for the second year in a row due to the Coronavirus pandemic. As unfortunate it is to see events suffer, it does give opportunity for other championship caliber courses to host great events.
We especially love when events come to our backyard in the southeast part of the country. Congraee is located in Ridgeland, SC which is just outside Hilton Head, SC & 2 hours southeast of Augusta, GA. There’s so many great courses within a few hours of each other down that way and we’re delighted to see another tour stop on the schedule.
With the 2021 US Open coming up the following weekend, it’s to be expected that many top tour players will skip this week’s tournament and head out to San Diego to get ahead of the jetlag and get some practice in, but there’s several big names on the tee sheet as well.
World #1 Dustin Johnson is headlining the event in his hometown state, and also making appearances are world #7 Brooks Koepka and #10 Tyrell Hatton. Tommy Fleetwood, Ian Poulter and Kevin Kisner also look to contend. The sleeper this week could also be Harold Varner III, who is as familiar with Carolina golf as anyone. Varner went to high school in Gastonia, NC and graduated college at East Carolina. While he didn’t play all that well at Jack’s Place this past weekend (+4), the kid’s got game and is due for a breakout performance any day now.
